🐰 Happy Easter! 🐰

I hope the bunny found everyone and that you all enjoyed some nice family time and the lovely weather this long weekend! It was really great to be back in the classroom and have the chance to reconnect with all the kids this past week...I sure missed everyone!

Learning Intention:

  • examine ways in which people create a climate of cooperation in a community
I Can:
  • appreciate the important contributions of individuals in a community
  • investigate different ways people contribute to a community

This week the Monday/Wednesday class had the opportunity to meet Constable Steve and his canine partner Cali...who are scheduled to come back on April 20th to visit the Tuesday/Thursday group!

Last month we excitedly began exploring superheroes. First, students brainstormed what the word superhero meant to them and came up with quite the list of characters like Ironman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman as well as a variety of superhero special powers! We had a really great discussion about whether the superheroes they were talking about were real or not, and we came to the conclusion that they were actually characters, like from a book or a movie. It only took a moment for a few students to make the connection and say things like "But there are kind of real life superheroes!" or "Well there are such things as real heroes." We began to uncover these comments more and students quickly connected that really what makes a superhero special is more about acts of kindness, bravery,  and selflessness. The conversation sparked and more students began giving examples of real life superheroes...

  • "Terry Fox was a superhero because he was helping people with cancer!"
  • "All of the people who fought in the war were superheroes because they were very brave."
  • "Police and fire fighters are superheroes because they save people!"
  • "Ambulance drivers save people too!"

Having Constable Steve and Cali join us was a wonderful way to showcase different ways the police help in the community. Cali is one of 2 trauma dogs (we called her a 'comfort' dog) who assists the Victim Assistance Support Team with victims of crime or tragedy. We learned that Cali's job is to help comfort others and make them feel calm. We had the chance to help Cali get ready for her work day by brushing her fur and her teeth, as well as putting on her special PADS vest and K9 police badge! Constable Steve explained how Cali went to school just like us so she could get trained properly and then she showed us some of her awesome tricks!  We had so much fun learning about the important jobs of Constable Steve and Cali and really appreciated having them come visit us 💗
