February 6th - 10th

This past week we spent lots of time talking about kindness. With Pink Shirt Day coming up on February 22nd, we also talked about bullying. We watched a short story about the origin of Pink Shirt Day and talked about the importance of standing up for each other.

The Story of Pink Shirt Day

We also read 'You Hold Me Up' written by Monique Gray Smith, a beautiful story encouraging us to show love and support for each other and to always consider the well-being of others. We talked about what the title might mean and after doing a picture walk, students decided that it meant taking care of others and and making them feel special.

Students wrote in their journals about different
ways that we can show kindness and help hold each other up.

Learning Outcome: Children recognize...
- personal boundaries can be communicated through words and actions
- boundaries can be communicated to set expectations for how a person would like to be treated
- personal boundaries are connected to an individual's body and personal space

I Can:
- describe personal and physical boundaries found in familiar contexts
- practice ways to express, request, obtain or refuse consent relating to personal boundaries
- talk about ways to respond in uncomfortable and unsafe situations

Together we role-played and acted out different scenarios to help students better understand the difference between behaviour that is RUDE (inadvertently saying or doing something that hurts someone else), MEAN (purposefully saying or doing something to hurt someone) and BULLYING (intentional aggressive behaviour that is repeated over time and involves an imbalance of power). We talked about having boundaries and 'personal bubbles', the importance that others respect our space and to make sure we remember to show respect towards others. We practiced using actions and strong voices to say "Please Stop" or "No Thank you" when somebody is disrespecting us and our personal boundaries.
