April 24th - 28th

Learning Intention:
  • Students explore size through direct comparison

I Can:
  • Compare the weight of two objects directly
  • Describe the size of an object in relation to another object using comparative language (heavier, lighter, equal)
  • Describe the size of an object in relation to a purpose or need, using comparative language

Together we had a group discussion about the words WEIGH and WEIGHT. Some guiding questions were: Have you ever heard these words? What do these words mean? Can you give an example?  Students came up with the following:
  • "It means how much you weigh...like how heavy you are."
  • "I weigh myself at home on a scale!"
  • "My doctor checks to see how much I weigh when I go there."
  • "I think you can weigh food because I've seen a weighing thing in the grocery store before."
Students worked in groups and were given a variety of objects to explore and talk about using comparative language such as heavy/light, heavier/lighter/ heaviest/lightest. Students were asked to draw a line on their page and mark it with L on one end for Light and H on the opposite end for Heavy. Once they had their page set up they began passing the objects around to decide which was the heaviest and which was the lightest. Next they recorded their findings in their journal. Students did a great job working in their groups sharing the objects as well as thinking and talking like mathematicians!

Thank you to Mr. Tyler for visiting us this week as a follow up to our Fire Station trip!
We talked about the importance of having an escape plan and NEVER hiding even if we are scared. We practiced staying low when there is smoke, yelling loudly for help and making lots of noise if we can't get out and how to STOP, DROP and ROLL if our clothing catches fire. Hopefully your child remembered to share their booklet with you and you had the chance to review it with them!
